In 1929, at age 25 as a young Urologist, Werner Forssmann demonstrated on his own body that a ureteral catheter could be inserted through a peripheral vein into the right atrium. Although he was fired from the hospital for this, he received a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1956 for his pioneering feat.
